Speedrunners found one weird trick... to killing a Wind Waker Boss

14 years on, and people are still finding new ways to defeat Wind Waker baddies.

Over at Kotaku, Heather Alexandra (who you might remember from these very pages not long ago) posted a story about a very, very bizarre new trick to beating The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker's Forbidden Woods boss.

According to her piece, YouTube user/Twitch streamer user Fish_Waffle64 posted a video beating the ferocious flora by using Forest Water -- a somewhat obscure quest item. Pouring the water on the plant kills it instantly, negating the previous need to use, you know, your sword to do the dirty work.

It does make a certain weird narrative sense, in the context of the game: the Forest Water is "pure" and helps other deku trees grow out in the wild. Given that this little trick works in both the original GameCube and updated Wii U version of the game, maybe it's a cool little adventure game style easter egg, and not just a wacky glitch.

Speedrunners, sequence breakers, and the other wild scientists of gaming have been coming up with some pretty out-of-the-box ways beat games for many years. But it feels like public interest in these pursuits has only gotten hotter in the era of streaming and Games Done Quick. It's especially exciting when a new trick is discovered about a beloved game -- such as Wind Waker.

I kind of want to jump into the game and pour Forest Water on everything now.

In the meantime, we've reached out to Nintendo for official comment, and we'll update the story accordingly.
