Persona 5 is Japan's best-selling Persona game to date
You know how in blockbuster movie trilogies, the first one does pretty well at the box office, but the sequels do way better? That's the case with Atlus's latest installment of its popular Shin Megami Tensei spinoff series, Persona. 3 might've kicked off a renewed wave of interest, 4 might've won all our hearts with its delightful cast, but 5 is making bank, baby.
Analytics org Media Create reports Persona 5 has broken series records since releasing in Japan last week, selling through 337,767 copies. That may not sound like much, but it exceeds first week sales for every previous installment of the Persona games. Keep in mind, this is a niche series (even if it's more mainstream than many Japanese role-playing games), and this entry released as a multiplatform title (available on both PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4). So it isn't, say, Halo. But it is a respectable amount of business for a Persona game and shows how much interest has built up for this particular release.
Now we just have to wait five months for it to launch here in the West (sigh).
Persona 5 is due out February 14th in 2017 for U.S. and Europe. If you're interested in going fancy, Atlus USA recently revealed a slick-looking steelbook edition.
