The Last Guardian has been delayed again

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The Last Guardian and Final Fantasy XV seem to be in a race to the finish line, only neither game wants to cross first. First announced in 2007, this followup by Team Ico (Shadow of the Colossus) has gone from hotly anticipated to speculated vaporware to, finally, seeing a definitive release date of October 25th announced at this summer's E3.

Unfortunately, it looks like players will be waiting a little longer for the giant catbird pet dog they've always wanted: The Last Guardian's release date has been pushed back to December 6th, to allow the team time to quash a few outstanding bugs.

"A delay is a difficult decision, particularly with this game, but we have encountered more bugs than anticipated while in the final stages of development," says Sony Computer Entertainment president Shuhei Yoshida, in a company blog post announcing the new release date. "To ensure that The Last Guardian delivers on the experience that the game’s creators have envisioned, we need to take the extra time to work on those issues."

Yoshida doesn't say as much, but given the timing, it's likely that this delay represents another case of the development studio submitting a new build through certification, a process which can take 1-2 months. When Final Fantasy XV was delayed citing similar issues, director Hajime Tabata openly acknowledged that recertification was the real hurdle the development team faced, not the time it took to address and patch outstanding issues -- which was largely work that had already been performed.

Still, if you are one of those who have felt extremely invested in The Last Guardian -- and there are definitely a lot of people emotionally invested in this game -- a final delay like this must feel bitter indeed. Fortunately, the new release date still lands before the major winter holidays, so if you were planning to buy a copy as a gift, everything should still work out.

The Last Guardian will be an exclusive for PlayStation 4 when it launches (certification gods willing) on December 6th.
